HCSO: Man suffers medical episode, drowns in canal

LA VILLA, Texas (ValleyCentral) — One person drowned Wednesday after falling into a canal, according to the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded to a welfare check near a canal bank on FM 1425 in rural La Villa.

A witness reported that while fishing with a friend at the canal, the friend appeared to suffer a medical episode and fell into the water.

First responders from surrounding cities initiated a search inside the canal, where a man's body was recovered.

An autopsy has been ordered.
