HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Vernon Middle School World Languages Academy students recently learned about the traditions of a quinceañera.
Spanish language teacher Norma Ibarra made sure her students were prepared for the tradition by having them plan out a party.
Ibarra said she separated her students into groups and gave them a task to prepare for the quinceañera. She said this was an important lesson for her students to understand the historical context.
"So, how it started, it was having the girl presented to the community now as a young lady but it was also a tradition for this event to happen for them to get married. So, that caught their attention right away," said Ibarra.
Students were responsible for contacting the bakery for the cake, creating a playlist for the dance, and organizing the guest list to send out invitations for the quinceañera.
