HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The City of Harlingen is advising its residents of flood aid scams following the heavy flood that occurred last week.

According to a social media post from the City of Harlingen, residents are asked to be aware of fake flood aid companies or individuals offering cleaning or aid with flood recoveries.

City officials advise the following steps to avoid being scammed:

  • Do your research on the company. Example: Does the company exists?
  • Get a business card and follow up with the company to assure they are in the area helping.
  • Never give out any personal information.
  • FEMA aid is free.
  • Never pay for a job up front.
