HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Sgt. Salvador Carmona from the Harlingen Police Department spoke about the importance of safety during the back-to-school season.
Many Rio Grande Valley school districts begin a new school year on Monday, and Sgt. Carmona gives key tips, such as drivers putting away phones, slowing down, and being aware of children darting between vehicles.
School buses require drivers to stop when flashing red lights are on, and failing to do so can result in felony charges. Crosswalks mandate stopping for pedestrians, and parents are advised to remind children to walk on sidewalks or face traffic.
Increased patrols will be in place at schools, and violations in school zones can result in fines up to $200, potentially doubling during enforcement periods.
