HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Sgt. Salvador Carmona from the Harlingen Police Department shared some safety tips for the Fourth of July weekend.

In the City of Harlingen, it is illegal to possess and discharge fireworks. Sgt. Carmona urges parents to supervise children and be cautious with fireworks. He recommends watching fireworks in public displays by professionals instead of falling victim to fireworks incidents.

Approximately 87 citations for fireworks were given out by Harlingen PD in 2024 over the Fourth of July holiday, Sgt. Carmona shared with ValleyCentral's Frank McCaffrey.

Additionally, Sgt. Carmona reminds us about TxDOT's campaign, 'Drive Sober, No Regrets', and stated that Harlingen PD will be out looking for DWIs.

Sgt. Carmona urges the public to make plans ahead of time and call an Uber to prevent driving while intoxicated. The public is strongly urged to stay off the road if planning on drinking.

Be safe this Fourth of July!
