HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Harlingen Medical Center celebrated the start of its new internal medicine residency program that will bring additional doctors to the Rio Grande Valley.

The new program was described as a historic, first-ever graduate medical education program at the Harlingen Medical Center.

According to a news release, 13 internal medicine residents will rotate through the Harlingen Medical Center during the first year of the program, which will increase medical coverage in the area.

The program expects to be fully staffed by its third year in 2026, with 39 internal medicine residents who will be rotating through the hospital.

“Our mission will be to train excellent physicians to deliver healthcare services in a variety of settings, and to help reduce shortages of physicians in our community,” said Candi Constantine-Castillo, CEO of Harlingen Medical Center.

The first class of physician residents will start their residency in July.
