HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Harlingen Fire crews are on the scene of a structure fire at Johnny’s True Value on 914 West Tyler Ave.

According to the department's Facebook post, fire officials are asking the public to stay clear of the area as they work to contain the blaze. Parts of Harrison Avenue and Tyler Avenue are closed.

Harlingen Fire Chief Rafael Balderas told ValleyCentral the building is a loss.

Balderas said at 5:11 a.m., the department received a call for service of smoke coming from the building.

"At this point, we are taking a defensive approach," said the chief. "We are using three aerial water devices to extinguish what remains of the blaze."

South Texas Arson Investigators are on their way to begin an investigation. In addition, the state fire marshal, who is in the area for other business, will stop by to view the damage, according to Balderas.

Brownsville Fire crews assisted Harlingen in putting out the fire.

The store offered a wide selection of ammunition, particularly suited for hunters. Eyewitnesses say they could hear the sounds of the ammunition popping in the flames.

This is a developing story.
