HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District announced that 11 of its elementary campuses have been named Capturing Kids' Hearts National Showcase Schools for the 2024-2025 school year.
The recognition highlights schools that go above and beyond to create positive, caring, and welcoming environments where students feel connected and supported.
"Being named a Capturing Kids' Hearts National Showcase School is a tremendous honor that reflects the heart, dedication, and hard work of our teachers, administrators, and staff," said Sylvia Gamboa, Director of Guidance and Counseling. "I am so proud of what our campuses have accomplished. This recognition is a testament to the strong, student-centered cultures we've built."
The CKH program began at Harlingen CISD in 2022 from a three-year grant from the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation. Teachers and staff are trained in simple but powerful strategies, like greeting students by name at the door, creating classroom agreements, and helping students take responsibility for their actions.
This year's schools include a mix of first-time and returning honorees:
- Austin Elementary IB World School
- Dishman Elementary (recognized for the second year in a row)
- Dr. Rodriguez Elementary STEM Academy
- Lamar Elementary Dual Language Academy (second year in a row)
