HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Plans to expand and upgrade the Harlingen Animal Shelter are underway.

The expansion will allow for an additional 29 open-air kennels throughout the facility.

"It'll add more space for us to hold additional animals," said Harlingen Health Director Shannon Harvill.

Harvill anticipates the shelter will continue to face challenges of overcrowding, despite the new upgrades.

She adds that one way to mitigate overcrowding at the shelter is for families to spay or neuter their animals.

"It'll be a huge benefit," Harvill adds. "They're not reproducing, which will help with the overcrowding of the animal shelter."

The Harlingen Animal Shelter is partnering with PetSmart to host an adoption event this weekend.

The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, May 24, at PetSmart located on 2317 W. Lincoln St. in Harlingen.

All pets will be up for adoption.
