Hamer: Strengthening U.S.-Mexico Ties

4 hours ago 8

Last week, I had the privilege of attending a sold-out gala in Mexico City hosted by the American Society of Mexico, where I serve on the Board under President Larry Rubin, MBA.

The event featured U.S. Ambassador Ron Johnson, who emphasized the vital U.S.-Mexico relationship and the private sector’s role in driving it forward.

Engaging with leaders from key Mexican business groups such as CCE and CONCAMIN—organizations TAB has MOUs with, alongside the American Society—was a highlight. These connections underscore the business community’s commitment to this critical partnership.

My wife, Tali, and I also had a productive conversation with Mexico’s Cabinet Secretary Alicia Barcena, further reinforcing the importance of collaboration.

I was also pleased to greet another Texan at the event, Betty Cardenas, president of Bienvenido Action PAC, who works closely with the Trump Administration in reaching out to Hispanic businesses.

On trade, I’ve been vocal in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada press about the importance of the USMCA, the most successful trade agreement in U.S. history, negotiated during President Trump’s first term. It elevated Mexico and Canada to our top trading partners, surpassing China. With tariff discussions ongoing, I advocate for keeping USMCA-compliant goods and semiconductor related supply chains, tariff-free, and extending this to other key sectors like steel, aluminum, cars, and copper. A strong North American trading bloc is essential to compete globally and support U.S. manufacturing.

As August 1st looms as the tariff deadline, stability is critical. Tariffs, effectively taxes on U.S. businesses and consumers, hit small businesses hardest. The U.S. Chamber’s recommendations to protect them are spot-on, supporting innovation and inflation control. Texas, the top U.S. exporter and FDI destination, stands to gain from increased trade and re-industrialization.

Post-gala, Tali and I enjoyed CDMX and Oaxaca—a culinary and cultural gem, home to world-class coffee, chocolate, and mezcal. Meetings with Oaxaca’s Governor, Mayor, and Secretary of Tourism capped an incredible trip.

Big thanks to my friend Brian Krupski, aka Mr. Gringo, for making it unforgettable!
