HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The city of Harlingen Community Development Department has expanded assistance for veterans.

The help comes through grant funding from the Texas Veterans Commission Fund for Veterans’ Assistance, according to the city.

The grant supports the programs Housing for Texas Heroes and General Assistance. The funds provide housing repairs and financial relief to eligible veterans, their dependents, and surviving spouses in Cameron County.

“These programs are part of our city’s ongoing commitment to honor and support the men and
women who have served our nation,” said Mayor Norma Sepulveda. “We want to ensure that every veteran in Harlingen has access to safe, stable housing and the resources they need to thrive.”

Housing for Texas Heroes provides essential home repairs, accessibility modifications, and weatherization services for veterans and surviving spouses. Priority is given to low-income and disabled veterans as determined by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Applicants must be a veteran or the surviving spouse of a veteran, be listed as the property owner with the county appraisal district, be current on their mortgage, home equity loans, and property taxes.

The General Assistance program offers financial help with rent, mortgage, and utility payments for veterans, dependents, and surviving spouses who demonstrate financial need. Applicants must be listed on the lease, mortgage, or utility account to qualify.

To apply contact the City of Harlingen Community Development Department at (956) 216-5180, or visit the Lon C. Hill Offices at 502 E. Tyler Ave.
