HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The government shutdown is entering its fourth week, and federal workers are not the only ones feeling the impact.
Some Harlingen restaurant owners say they have fallen into the 'red', meaning they are operating without any profit. Some days, they are seeing little to no business at all. Owners say they first started noticing a small number of customers walking through their doors about three weeks ago.
“Some are starting to shut down. They can’t withstand what’s happening. Of course, you have staff, you have rent, your light, your water, everything that comes with owning a business,” said Josie Olivarez, co-owner of Chyann’s Specialty Café.
Chyann Hernandez, co-owner of Chyann’s Specialty Café, says this is typically their busiest time of year. Sometimes, they even have to hire extra staff to keep up, but this year, they are struggling to make ends meet.
Hernandez’s business is not the only one feeling the impact. Others in the area are also struggling to stay afloat.
Janie Leija, owner of Just Fresh in Harlingen, says while they are going through a difficult time, they also feel for the entire community.
“We have kids in college, so it hits us hard. We relate with the community, so we know that everybody is experiencing the same thing right now,” Leija said.
Both businesses took to social media to share their struggles. Other businesses commented, saying they are in the same boat. The social media post by Just Fresh caught the attention of Harlingen Mayor Norma Sepulveda.
“You know, people are struggling, and I think it is because there’s less money going around. I do speak with small business owners, and I do my best to try and shop local and visit restaurants and boutiques just to support them,” Sepulveda said.
Maria Escobar with the Harlingen Economic Development Corporation said there are city resources available to help, including grants, marketing assistance, and business planning support.
“The Harlingen EDC is here to support them. We ask that you reach out to us, and we’ll find a resource available to help you,” Escobar said.
Both business owners said they are trying to stay positive and even offer specials to meet customers halfway. City officials and restaurant owners agree the best way to help is to shop local.
