McALLEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott appointed McAllen City Manager Isaac J. Tawil to the Texas Municipal Retirement System Board of Trustees, the governor's office announced Tuesday.
The state board oversees the Texas Municipal Retirement System and is responsible for providing a secure retirement benefit plan for eligible employees of more than 800 cities across the state.
In a news release, Tawil stated he was humbled by the appointment.
"This role represents an opportunity to serve not only the City of McAllen, but also the thousands of dedicated municipal employees across our great state who give so much to their communities every day," Tawil said.
Tawil added that he will continue to set the standard for fiscal responsibility, innovation and will bring that perspective to the board.
"At the heart of public service is the promise of stability, security, and stewardship and TMRS embodies that promise," Tawil said. "I look forward to working with my fellow trustees to safeguard the system’s financial health, strengthen transparency, and ensure that every public servant, whether they serve in city halls, patrol cars, fire stations, or community centers, can look forward to a secure retirement."
Tawil's term is set to expire on Feb. 1, 2031.
