Georgia woman pleads guilty to smuggling firearms into Mexico

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A 38-year-old woman pleaded guilty to smuggling several firearms and magazines hidden in a vehicle's gas tank, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced.

On Dec. 15, 2024, Mirna Luna traveled from Canton, Georgia and attempted to cross to Mexico from the Brownsville/Matamoros Port of Entry.

According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, at the port of entry, Luna was referred to a secondary inspection where authorites found 17 firemarms and 27 magazines hidden in the gas tank of a Nissan car.

Luna claimed ownership of the car to authoriites and admitted she was the only person who drives it. Additionally, Luna does not have a license to export firearms and has not applied for one, the release stated.

U.S. District Judge Fernando Rodriguez Jr. accepted Luna's plea and scheduled sentencing for July, 8.

Luna gaces up to 10 years in federal prison and a $250,000 maximum fine.
