HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The founder and matriarch of Las Vegas Cafe in Harlingen passed away Monday, family members say.
Eloina M. Charles died at 96 years old in the comfort of her own home.
Charles established Las Vegas Cafe in 1964 which has become a Harlingen staple as a casual spot for generations of customers to create memories and enjoy Tex-Mex food.
The founder's passing was shy of the cafe's 60th anniversary.
"It happened all of a sudden," said Charles' daughter, Julie Charles.
Julie and her sister, Lori Davila currently own and operate Las Vegas Cafe. The sisters say their mother was a hard-working and determined woman.
"Today, the restaurant is still a reflection of her love for cooking," Las Vegas Cafe announced in a statement. "We are so thankful to be a part of her legacy."
