The former school board president for Progreso who has pleaded guilty to federal cocaine trafficking charges was arrested Saturday for assaulting his wife.

Progreso police were dispatched to Francisco Javier Alanis’ residence at 2:33 a.m. Saturday in reference to a disturbance.

A probable cause affidavit for his arrest said that his wife told the responding officer that her husband was intoxicated and assaulted her in the bedroom of their home while she was asleep.

“Mr. Alanis grabbed her by the side of the head and pulled her out of bed,” the affidavit stated.

She told police that he grabbed a hold of her hair and ear, causing her pain. She said he also grabbed her by the neck and chest.

The woman was able to get loose, grabbed her phone and ran outside to call for help.

The responding officer reported that she had red marks on her chest, indicating she had been assaulted, according to the affidavit.

When police made contact with Francisco Javier Alanis, they reported he smelled like alcohol, showed signs of intoxication and refused to cooperate.

He has been charged with assault causing bodily injury to a family member.

The man previously reached a plea deal with prosecutors in his federal cocaine trafficking case.

“(Francisco Javier) Alanis provided money or financing to obtain tractor trailers, insurance with the purpose of using said tractor trailers for the transportation of cocaine from Progreso, Texas to other predetermined places within the United States,” his plea agreement stated.

A prior court hearing also revealed that investigators found “packaging materials for narcotics” at his workspace at the Progreso school district and cooperating individuals said he was re-packaging narcotics at the public middle school where he worked.

He was arrested in that case in October 2023.

His brother and former Progreso mayor, Gerardo Alanis, has also pleaded guilty to distributing cocaine in the scheme.

Both men are scheduled for sentencing in June.

As of mid-Tuesday afternoon, Francisco Javier Alanis remained jailed in the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center on a $15,000 bond.
