CAMERON COUNTY, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A fisherman died Tuesday after his boat was run over by a barge in the Laguna Madre, Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Wardens reported.

At about 11 a.m. Tuesday, two men from Weslaco were fishing in the Laguna Madre just outside of the Arroyo.

The two were encountering mechanical issues with their boat and were unable to avoid a barge while in the ship channel.

As a result, their boat was run over by the barge and the two men went under. The Game Wardens say the two were able to surface on the other side conscious. However, the surviving fisherman told authorities his partner became unresponsive.

Good Samaritans spotted the two men and attempted to perform CPR on the unresponsive man.

The men were taken to shore where they were met by Game Wardens who attempted life saving procedures. However, the unresponsive man died at the scene.

The fishermen's boat was recovered by the national Guard and brought back to shore.

Since the accident involved a commercial and a recreational boat the case was handed over to the U.S. Coast Guard.
