While they report kidnappings have decreased in the last decade, FBI assistant special agent Marcus Joachim said American visitors should remain aware.

He said kidnappers from organized criminal groups, and demand thousands of dollars in ransom.

“I don’t believe there’s any correlation between who is targeted based on age," Joachim said. "It’s just a matter of the victims who appeared to be American. Those are the individuals that are being targeted on these buses.”

Joachim and the FBI said if you see anything suspicious, or if a loved one is kidnapped, to contact the FBI immediately.

The FBI has 96 legal offices and sub-offices. These offices provide coverage for more than 180 countries, territories, and islands. You can contact these offices to report any incidents involving Americans.
