The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating a four-vehicle crash that left a father and his 4-year-old son dead early Monday morning in Edinburg.
During their investigation, authorities found that the crash occurred around 2:38 a.m. after a white Chevrolet Malibu, occupied by one male driver, was traveling northbound on U.S. 281 on a southbound lane.
Police suspect the driver of the Malibu was intoxicated during the time of the crash after they found beer cans inside his vehicle. Authorities are still awaiting bloodwork.
At the same time a white Chevrolet Colorado, occupied by one female driver and a child, were driving south on U.S. 281 and veered off the roadway to avoid crashing into the Malibu.
The driver of the Colorado lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll over and stopping on the southbound frontage road.
The driver and passenger of the Colorado were transported to DHR Health where they are in stable condition.
A black Hyundai Tucson, occupied by a male driver later identified as Mark Anthony Alvarez and his son John Andrew Escamilla, was also traveling south on U.S. 281 when it crashed into the Malibu.
This caused the Hyundai Tucson to spin across the southbound lanes, which caused a white Freightliner tractor-trailer to crash into the Hyundai.
Alvarez, 32, and his son, Pharr residents, were transported to DHR Health where they died due to their injuries. The boy was not secured in his seat, according to DPS.
The driver of the Malibu was also transported to DHR Health where he is in critical condition.
