SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The 85th Texas International Fishing Tournament (TIFT), a family-oriented event held at Port Isabel and South Padre Island, had people from all over the country bonding over their passion for fishing.
This five-day event kicked off Wednesday and is expected to run until Sunday. During the first day of fishing activities, competitors brought enormous catches such as marlins, sailfish, and Mahi-mahi to weigh and measure them.
ValleyCentral spoke to Hayley Lawson, Dock Master, and also part of the executive order of TIFT, about her responsibilities at the events.
Lawson shared that she coordinates the dock by ensuring volunteers and anglers are safe. She also helps park large boats.

This event began 92 years ago, in 1933, by Doc J.A. Hockaday to promote the phenomenal fishing in the Rio Grande Valley, according to tift.org.
About 15,000 fishermen and more than 500 boats are expected to join the fishing adventure during its two days of fishing activities.
Besides enjoying Texas' hot summer and being surrounded by the sparkling waters of the Laguna Madre Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, money raised is given to students headed to college.
