EDINBURG, CIL Group is to construct a 200,000 square foot warehouse to house cotton in Edinburg, its president has revealed.

Joaquin Spamer tells the Rio Grande Guardian he has purchased 11 acres of land in the Edinburg North Industrial Park for this purpose.

“We are very grateful to Raudel and the EDC team. They did a great job in (helping us) invest here in the city (of Edinburg), Spamer said.

“I couldn’t be more grateful to the mayor, to Ramiro, and the whole (city) commission for inviting us to the city. We do believe that Edinburg is one of the best locations where we can store and distribute cotton from.”

The “Raudel” Spamer was citing was Raudel Garza, executive director of Edinburg Economic Development Corporation.

Spamer said the cotton he will purchase for the Edinburg warehouse will be grown in the Rio Grande Valley. He said it will be exported to Mexico.

Spamer said he was attracted to Edinburg’s North Industrial Park because it is next to I-69 East. “You can be on the road very fast,” he said.

CIL likes building warehouses at around 200,000 square feet to store its cotton, Spamer said.

“We already have one, exactly the same, in Weslaco. We’re building another one very close to the same size in Brownsville. We have another one at 250,000 square feet in Weslaco and we are starting construction in Pharr (measuring) 242,000 square feet. We have a 240,000 (square feet) warehouse in Alamo We also have plans to build in Harlingen and McAllen,” Spamer said.

Asked about the timeline for construction, Spamer said he hopes the new Edinburg facility will be ready by the start of the next cotton season.

“We’re about to start the new 2024-25 cotton season. So, we’re looking at the end of July, beginning of August of next year.”

Spamer added: “We are excited to be coming to Edinburg. It is a great location. It’s one of the best cities in the region, unique. I believe Edinburg offers a lot to companies like me wanting to invest in industrial real estate.”

Edinburg Mayor Ramiro Garza said he was thrilled to welcome CIL to his city.

“We’re very excited. We want to thank Mr. Joaquin Spamer and his whole team at CIL for investing in our city. I know he has options of where to invest and I know he’s been investing throughout the region. We’ve been on him to come to Edinburg, come to Edinburg,” Mayor Garza said. “I just want to thank him and his team for believing in our city and investing here. I know that he will be successful.”
