Alta Vista Rehabilitation and Healthcare in Brownsville is again flying the Ensign Flag, an indicator the facility has met strict criteria for excellence in patient care.
Alta Vista was one of only three Ensign Group facilities in Texas to qualify for the flag this year. It last won the recognition in 2022 and has won the flag three times in the past five years, Executive Director Norma Guerrero said.
Since the pandemic ended a few years ago, Alta Vista has provided both outpatient and inpatient care.
“We do in-patient therapy where you come and you stay here, get better and go back home. And then we do out-patient, where you come and you just get therapy and you go home that same day. You don’t live here. We’re your provider for your physical therapy, occupational therapy or speech therapy, whatever the doctor recommends,” Guerrero said.
The facility gets referrals from doctors and hospitals, where people return home from the hospital and then go to Alta Vista for their therapy, with the facility providing transportation, she said.
“Basically, we focus on getting the patient back to the prior level of function, whatever that level was,” Guerrero said.
The facility primarily serves an older population, but patients can be as young as 18.
The Ensign Group, based in San Juan Capistrano, California, acquired Alta Vista in 2009. The company operates more than 300 similar facilities across the country and 82 in Texas. Services include nursing and assisted living, physical, occupational and speech therapies, home health and hospice services, urgent care and other rehabilitative and healthcare services.
