EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — An Edinburg woman is set to make her initial appearance before a judge Thursday for allegedly committing health care fraud.
Cynthia Ann Herera is charged with health care fraud and aggravated identity theft in connection with a scheme to defraud the Texas Medicaid Program, according to U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei.
An indictment of her case alleges that Herera submitted or caused the submission of fraudulent claims to Medicaid for prescriptions that a doctor had never prescribed.
The claims took place between 2018 and 2024 and resulted in more than $2 million in Medicaid payments, according to the charges.
According to U.S. attorney's office, Herrera used the personal information of doctors without their consent to bill Medicaid for prescriptions.
She is charged with six counts of health care fraud, each of which carry a possible 10-year maximum sentence. Additionally the charges carry a $250,000 fine.
Additionally, Herera faces six counts of aggravated identity theft. If convicted, she faces a mandatory two years which must be served consecutively to any other sentence imposed, according to the U.S. attorney's office.
