The Edinburg Consolidated School District on Tuesday canvassed the votes from the Nov. 5 election, conducted the oath of office and elected board members into officer positions.
ECISD residents voted to reelect incumbents Luis “Louie” Alamia for Place 4 and Carmen Gonzalez for Place 6.
David Torres ran unopposed for Place 7. It is not his first time on the Edinburg school board as he said he had two terms from 2007 to 2015
Place 3 board member Leticia “Letty” Garcia made the motion to nominate Torres as president, Gonzalez as vice president and Place 2 board member Letty Flores as secretary.
Speaking about the wealth of experience that Torres and Gonzales have, Garcia also made the point to give Flores a chance to serve as an elected officer on the board.
The nominations passed unanimously.
Torres previously has a term with South Texas ISD as a board member from 2020 to 2024. He also served as ECISD vice president in 2009, president in 2011 and was a former Edinburg city council member who served as mayor pro-tem in 2018 and 2019.
“I’ve been blessed, I was lucky enough to be voted in as president,” Torres said. “It’s not what I had in mind, but I know I’m willing to step up to the plate and do that. I’m going to bring in my mentality which is a team approach for success and of course, to facilitate our staff and our community and everything we do, with the main focus always being what’s best for our community.”
Torres owns and operates David’s Bail Bonds and A-Lightning Bails, is a partner at Odyssey Primary Home Care and At Home Health Care, is a managing partner at JDRED Investments and a partner at DC Fabrication and Oilfield Services.
“As a businessman in the community for the past 27 years, I know how it is to keep an eye on your budget and work with what you have to reach your goals,” he said.
“I’m walking into a situation where the board has done a great job,” Torres said. “They’re frugal in their spending and of course I’m walking in and there’s still a lot of things, even with my experience, that I have to come up to par on, but I don’t see any major red flags as far as the financial status of the district.”
In October, the district faced some issues with the attempt of censuring Alamia and Place 1 board member Dominga Vela.
Torres said with a team approach mentality, it will resolve conflicts within the board and get everyone to talk and work toward the same goals for the district.
“I want to continue to enhance the team of eight,” he said. “We have a current group with a lot of … different strengths. As long as we all talk about it and as long as we’re trying to reach goals, I think it’s going to eliminate a lot of those things.”
