EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The City of Edinburg, in partnership with DHR Health, South Texas Health Systems, Hidalgo County Health, Edinburg Economic Development Corporation, and UTRGV Health, held a Prostate Cancer Wellness Event.
The free event took place at the Edinburg Activities, Culture & Events Center, located at 315 W. McIntyre Street, where Prostate-Specific Antigen testing was provided at no charge for attendees, while supplies lasted.
The event was held to highlight the importance of early detection and what resources are available for those who are affected by prostate cancer.
"This is about encouraging men in our community to take charge of their health," said Ramiro Garza, Mayor of the City of Edinburg. "Early detection saves lives, and I hope this event inspires more men to get screened."
The Cancer Wellness Event was held in honor of Mayor Garza, who announced his diagnosis with prostate cancer and that he would not seek re-election to focus on his health.
Garza has been vocal and a strong advocate for open conversation about men's health and the importance of regular health screenings.
He added that this event is all about health, staying informed, and being vigilant about one's health.
