The initiative was about three weeks long and within that time frame, police conducted over 40 DWI arrests.

"There was one underage drinker that was arrested," said Lieutenant Gabriel Vela-Reyna.

The effort took an urgent turn just before 9:00 p.m. on Saturday when an alleged drunk driver at the intersection of West University Drive and Pin Oak Road rear-ended an Edinburg police officer's unit.

"One of our officers was stationary at one of the intersections by Pin Oak and West University and his unit was struck by a person that was an alleged drunk driver."

The driver was identified as 58-year-old Nicolas Garcia Dominguez of Edinburg.

Dominguez was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving while intoxicated and arraigned for DWI with a cash surety bond of $5,000.

There were no reported injuries and minor damage to the vehicle.

Edinburg police want this incident to serve as a reminder of the importance of planning ahead and driving responsibly.
