An Edinburg man’s charges were “elevated” to murder after his father died from an assault he admitted to committing, according to a news release from the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.

Francisco Coronado Jr., 42, was initially charged with injury to elderly with serious bodily injury, which was upgraded to murder after his father, 86-year-old Francisco Coronado, died days after the assault.

According to the initial new release regarding the assault, at 10:33 p.m. on April 15, Hidalgo County sheriff’s deputies responded to a welfare check in the 6500 block of Sharp Road in rural San Carlos.

Once there, the deputies spoke with family members who reported that Francisco Coronado was assaulted by his son.

Francisco Coronado was found bleeding from his head, nose and mouth. He appeared disoriented but said that he had been attacked before being transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

The following day, investigators with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Violent Fugitive Task Force located and took Francisco Coronado Jr. into custody where he confessed to assaulting his father, according to the initial release.

On Wednesday, Francisco Coronado was transferred to hospice care due to his injuries but then died on Friday. An autopsy conducted on his body revealed was caused by blunt force trauma to the head, according to Monday’s news release.

Monday, the charges against Francisco Coronado Jr. were “elevated to murder” and was given a cash surety bond of $1 million. He remains in custody at the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center.
