Federal authorities on Tuesday arrested an Edinburg man after investigators found 9,000 videos and images of child sexual abuse material on his cellphone.

Those images include a video of a toddler being sexually assaulted by a man, according to a criminal complaint.

The suspect is Carlos Genaro Rodriguez-Luna Jr., a U.S. citizen born in 2005.

The investigation began on Dec. 31 after FBI agents in New York identified a Telegram account associated with the distribution of child sexual abuse material.

That account was “associated with the sharing of photographs and videos of unknown individuals performing self-inflicted ‘cutting’ and child pornography.”

The FBI tracked the user to the Valley and on Monday FBI agents identified Rodriguez and his residence.

They executed a search warrant Tuesday and conducted a consensual interview with Rodriguez, who consented to a search of his cellphone after telling agents he had downloaded and viewed child sexual abuse material at his residence, according to the complaint.

“Rodriguez-Luna further admitted to downloading/receiving child pornography for approximately the past six months. Rodriguez-Luna also disclosed to FBI (special agents) that he was the owner of the Telegram account … associated to his previous cellphone number,” the complaint stated. “Rodriguez-Luna admitted to storing child pornography on his Telegram account, stating being in possession of approximately 8,000 videos and approximately 1,000 images.”

He was scheduled to make a first appearance in McAllen federal court Wednesday in front of U.S. Magistrate Judge Juan F. Alanis, court records show.
