EDINBURG, Texas – Jeffrey Salcedo Cantú, the new international development business manager for the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation (EEDC), spoke about the outreach the EEDC is doing for the business market in Mexico.

Salcedo Cantú has worked for the EEDC for about two months and has previous experience working for media companies such as Televisa and KRGV-TV Channel 5 located in Weslaco. He said he also had a digital marketing company located in Reynosa, Mexico and the Rio Grande Valley for the last ten years.

During an interview on Wednesday, Salcedo Cantú said some of the reasons why Edinburg is a potential sight for investors include the city’s quality of life, its academic levels, the agriculture quality and the highways connecting the city.

Edinburg CISD has a 93.9% four-year graduation rate, last updated 2023-2024, according to the Texas Tribune. The city also houses produce companies such as Little Bear Produce, Lakeside Produce and Nicho Produce that make up a large part of Edinburg’s agricultural industry, according to the city’s website

“What we are doing now in Edinburg and the reason why I am on the team with Raudel Garza, all the people on the staff and the EEDC, we are connecting Edinburg to the Valley, to Texas, with investors and Mexican businessmen, especially for those entrepreneurs looking to enter the North American market,” Salcedo Cantú said.

“We are inviting them to take their first step in Texas, especially those entrepreneurs looking to enter the North American market. We are inviting them to take their first step in Texas, but more specifically to take their first step in the valley, and of course, with special emphasis on the city of Edinburg, given all the opportunities and advantages we now have.”

Salcedo Cantú spoke about the distribution process that truckers deal with in North and South of Pharr due to bridge crossings. He emphasized the importance of the 281 Highway truckers have to cross through, due to it being long and heavily traveled, extending from the Brownsville Mexican Border to the Canadian Border.

“It is very important for the logistics, the point where you will distribute your merchandise or products,” Salcedo Cantú said. “That is why many companies that are going to distribute their goods North prefer to have the truck land once it has crossed Pharr and drop off their loads on the highway where they will finally be loaded.”

He also said one of the reasons why investors are interested in Edinburg is the growth in numbers of investment the city has had over the years.

“The effort that Edinburg is making, but the effort that cities like Pharr, McAllen, and Mission as a whole are making is very important to be able to show the potential, both to Mexico and to other parts of the world, of what we have here,” Salcedo Cantú said.
