EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The city of Edinburg on Monday honored the winningest coach in the history of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball program.

Edinburg officials unveiled North Sugar Road as "Coach Al Ogletree Way".

UTRGV Vaquero's Coach Derek Matlock spoke about Coach Ogletree's legacy.

"He impacted the city, impacted the university, and boy, did he impact a lot of young men's lives by his leadership," Matlock said. "You know, we're the program in this school that has a lot of championships, a lot of success, and that helps us win. Any time you have some tradition, it gives you an opportunity to be better, and we have tradition in baseball here."

As head coach of the university’s baseball team from 1968 through 1997, Ogletree guided the program to 13 NCAA Regionals and one College World Series appearance.

Ogletree was inducted into the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame in 1987.
