EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District Police Chief Ricardo Perez Jr. was honored with a surprise ceremony Wednesday.

South Texas Health System honored Chief Perez for helping students that were struggling with their mental health. Perez was recognized for his leadership in educating and training the district's officers and security guards in crisis intervention and incidents with students experiencing mental health issues.

Officers, led by Perez, work closely with campus administration and staff to ensure the students receive the support they need, a news release stated.

"He has exemplified the importance of seeking mental health services at the slightest sign of instability, making him a true Hometown Hero," said Linda Cantu, MEd, LPC, Intake Department Director, South Texas Health System Behavioral, who has worked closely with the chief and his staff over the years.

The ceremony was held Wednesday at the Edinburg CISD Administration Offices.
