EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — School board trustees with the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District voted to hire a third-party consulting firm to review policies and procedures related to a gun incident involving a student.

The incident occurred on May 6 when 18-year-old student Kinzey Lira was found with a handgun and a loaded magazine with ten rounds of ammunition at Edinburg North High School.

The incident prompted community members to question the district's policies and procedures.

On Tuesday evening, the board voted to hire Moak Casey, an educational consulting firm based in Austin.

The firm is known to help school districts across Texas with various matters.

"They're going to be looking into the protocols — state-required protocols and if they were followed that day," the district's legal counsel, Benjamin Castillo, said. "And whatever kind of issues there may be, they're going to recommend to the board and the district how to get better."

Following a series of issues within the district, including the gun incident, Superintendent Mario Salinas was placed on a five-day paid administrative leave.
