Early voting underway as counties roll out digital check-ins

HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Early voting is now underway for the Nov. 4 elections, and there are several races and propositions on the ballot.

Voters have less than two weeks to cast their ballots early in the 2025 Special Constitutional Amendment and Local Entities Elections.

Both Hidalgo and Cameron County election administrators say they are modernizing the early voting process this election season. The goal is to make casting a ballot as easy and efficient as possible.

Remi Garza, the Cameron County Elections Administrator, says they are expecting about 10 to 12 percent of registered voters to vote early this year.

To help ease the process, the county is incorporating digital check-ins for the first time.

"Well, before, they used to see three people that would process them. Now they're probably going to see two or even one person that can actually handle the whole check-in procedure. It’s a tablet versus a laptop, but the fundamental change will be that they’ll be asked to use an electronic signature versus a wet-ink signature," Garza said.

Hilda Salinas, Hidalgo County Elections Administrator, says Hidalgo County is also making the switch to digital check-ins, with all 29 polling locations now equipped with the new system.

"Well, we are expecting people to head to the polls. We do have 17 amendments on the ballot. They're a wide variety of amendments, and it does affect people within the state of Texas as well as Hidalgo County," Salinas said.

Election officials recommend reviewing the sample ballot online before heading to the polls to ensure you are prepared to make informed decisions when casting your vote.

Early voting for multiple local elections across the Rio Grande Valley began Monday and will run through Friday, Oct. 31.

Election Day is Nov. 4, 2025.
