The Texas Department of Public Safety said the driver of a vehicle evading U.S. Border Patrol due to his vehicle being loaded with narcotics died Tuesday following a crash with a freightliner truck.
DPS identified the driver Wednesday as Brownsville resident Yahir David Martinez, 21.
According to a news release, the two-vehicle fatal crash occurred at about 12:55 p.m. Tuesday on SH 4 east of North Indiana Avenue in Brownsville.
DPS said a preliminary investigation revealed a Ford F-150 — occupied by Martinez, one female and one male passenger — loaded with bundles of narcotics “failed to yield and evaded” Border Patrol.
“The Ford traveled at a high rate of speed westbound on SH 4 east of N. Indiana Ave, losing control, and collided with a Freightliner truck tractor semi-trailer, just east of the intersection,” the release stated.
The agency said the driver of the freightliner was transported to Valley Regional and has since been released.
The unidentified woman in Martinez’s truck was transported to Valley Regional where she remains and is in Border Patrol custody. After being transported to Valley Baptist Medical Center, the unidentified man also in Martinez’s truck was released and in custody.
DPS said troopers are further investigating the crash, adding that the Drug Enforcement Administration took custody of the narcotics.
