A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper is in stable condition after a crash during a drunk driving investigation in Pharr.
DPS said it’s investigating the three-vehicle crash that happened Tuesday at approximately 6:51 a.m. on Expressway 83 westbound, east of McColl Road in Pharr.
The preliminary investigation indicates the trooper was stationary on the east side improved shoulder while making contact with a man in a 2012 black Chrysler.
During initial contact with the driver — 28-year-old Mercedes resident Reyes Madrid Mondragon — the trooper detected signs of intoxication.
“The trooper was conducting Standardized Field Sobriety tests on the driver of the Chrysler when a 2024 white Chevrolet Silverado (occupied by one male driver) was traveling westbound on US 83 and struck the rear passenger side of the DPS patrol unit,” the release stated.
The impact caused the DPS unit to hit the rear of the Chrysler while the Chevrolet continued traveling westbound before rolling over.
The trooper and both drivers were taken to the hospital and are in stable condition.
DPS said mid-morning Tuesday that Mondragon was released from the hospital and arrested for driving while intoxicated.
The driver of the Chevrolet wasn’t immediately identified and it’s unclear whether they will also face any charges.
DPS continues to investigate the crash.
