DPS locate vehicle involved in fatal auto-ped, driver at large

WESLACO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Texas Department of Public Safety investigators have located the vehicle they believe was involved in a fatal auto-pedestrian hit-and-run crash.

At approximately 5:59 a.m. on Sunday, May 18, authorities responded to an auto-pedestrian crash that occurred on Mile 4 West Road north of Mile 12 1/2 Road North in Weslaco, according to a news release from Texas DPS.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a woman, later identified as 27-year-old Weslaco resident Cassandra I. Hernandez, was walking southbound on Mile 4 W. Road in the southbound lane when a black Chevrolet Impala going southbound on Mile 4 W. hit her.

Hernandez died from her injuries at the scene, the release added. The driver of the Chevrolet Impala car did not stop to render aid and left the scene, according to DPS.

DPS later located the vehicle in Welsaco and took it into custody for evidence.
