DPS announces holiday traffic enforcement across Valley

The Texas Department of Public Safety announced its annual Christmas and New Year’s holiday traffic enforcement initiative on Friday.

The initiative which began the same day as the announcement will run up until Jan. 1.

During that time, DPS troopers will be looking out for drivers violating the law.

To help, DPS provided people tips on how to stay safe during the initiative and avoid arrest.

If one plans to drink during an event or a get together, don’t drive. They should make alternate plans like having a designated driver or calling on Uber or Lyft.

When police, fire, EMS or DPS vehicles are driving up with their emergency lights on, one should move aside or slow down in order to help them get to where they need to be.

This also applies to tow trucks or similar vehicles pulled over alongside the road.

Slowing down during bad weather, heavy traffic or construction zones helps keeping others and yourself safe.

If someone or yourself are involved in a non-injury crash and your vehicle can be moved, please clear the traffic lanes to minimize the impact to oncoming traffic.

Texas law requires slower traffic to the right lane and use the left lane for passing only. It’s the courteous thing to do and helps avoid impeding traffic on multi-lane roads.

One should also never cut in front of large trucks and avoid braking quickly in front of them as they can’t maneuver as easily as passenger vehicles.

As a reminder, people should always wear their seat belts, not just because it’s the law, but it could save a life.

As a precaution, one should also monitor the weather and road conditions before traveling.
