A preliminary investigation revealed that a silver Chevrolet Malibu, which was occupied by two men, was travelling east on FM1925, when the driver lost control and veered into the westbound lanes, before striking a mailbox and fence.

A black Tahoe, which was occupied by a male driver and three female passengers, was travelling westbound on FM 1925 and stopped after seeing the Malibu lose control.

A white Chevrolet Camaro that was traveling eastbound behind the Malibu swerved to avoid colliding with it, and lost control and side-swiped the Tahoe, DPS stated.

The driver of the Malibu fled the scene on foot, the news release stated. The passenger, identified as 49-year-old Edgar Ivan Garcia of Edinburg, died from his injuries at the scene.

All four occupants of the Tahoe, and the sole driver of Camaro were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

DPS is asking those with information on the Malibu's driver whereabouts to contact the Weslaco office at (956)-565-7600.
