In order to facilitate work on the Brownsville Public Utilities Board Water/Wastewater Improvement Project, the city is encouraging motorists to plan alternative routes as a result of a temporary street closure.
East 7th Street, between East St. Charles and East Levee streets, will be closed starting 9 a.m. on Jan. 13. Work is expected to finish on Feb. 4 weather permitting, a news release stated.
“This project is part of ongoing efforts to enhance water and wastewater infrastructure in the downtown area, ensuring reliable and sustainable services for residents and businesses,” the city said in the release.
Motorists are encouraged to plan alternative routes as well as exercise caution when traveling near the construction zone. There will be detour signage to guide drivers around the area.
The project is part of a major infrastructure project aimed at improving water and wastewater services downtown, which the city and BPUB held a ceremonial groundbreaking for back in May 2024.
Brownsville Mayor John Cowen Jr. at the time called the projects “not just an upgrade … (but) a transformation.”
