Donna school district police arrested a Pharr man last Thursday on a charge of improper relationship between an educator and student.
Javier Hernandez, 47, is also charged with indecency with a child by sexual contact.
Sandra Quintanilla, the district’s public relations officer, confirmed Wednesday Hernandez was a teacher and has submitted his resignation.
“The alleged behavior does not align with the high standards we expect of our teachers, who are entrusted with creating a protective and nurturing environment for our students,” the district said in its statement.
Hernandez passed all “rigorous background checks” prior to his employment, according to the district.
“Immediately after we were made aware of the inappropriate conduct, we filed reports with law enforcement and the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services,” the statement read. “We continue to fully cooperate with all ongoing investigations.”
“The safety and well-being of our students continues to be our highest priority,” the district said.
Hernandez’s bonds totaled to $40,000, which he has since posted.
He was released Saturday.
