LA GRULLA, Texas (ValleyCentral) — "The injuries are so severe [the veterinarians] can't determine the cause," a description Rebecca Chavez, Chief Operations Officer for Yaqui Animal Rescue, gave ValleyCentral regarding the dog's injuries following an animal cruelty case.

On Wednesday, July 2, the La Grulla Police Department was dispatched to a possible animal cruelty case, where they came across a dog in need of immediate medical attention.

A team from Pawradise Dog Rescue and Sanctuary took the dog in for treatment, where photos show the animal had visible, severe marks of face trauma and infection.

Alejandro Salinas was charged with cruelty to a non-livestock animal, according to a Starr County Sheriff's Office spokesperson.

The dog is being treated at Pet Doctor 911 Animal Medical Center.

Chavez stated that, at this time, the vets are flushing and keeping the wound as clean as possible.

"On top of being neglected with that injury, he was also not fed regularly, he has a body score of one out of nine, which is very emaciated, he was not given water regularly, so the vets had a very difficult time finding his veins because he was so dehydrated," she explained. "So there was neglect all around when it came to this dog."

Chavez said out of the many cases she has seen during her time in Yaqui Animal Rescue, this specific case is one of her top five worst animal cruelty cases she has witnessed.

"For me, this is definitely one of the most severe cases I've ever seen," she stated.

Chavez added, the veterinarians are doing everything they can to help the dog get better, which can take, what she describes as "an indefinite amount of time."
