HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — U.S. Rep Vicente Gonzalez delivered a speech Monday after an honorable South Texas Veteran was removed from a military history website.
Vicente spoke on behalf of U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Alfredo "Freddy" Gonzalez.
Freddy was killed during the Battle of Huế in Vietnam on Feb. 4, 1968. He was 21 years old.
Vicente expressed his disappointment toward the Trump Administration, calling Freddy's removal a disgrace.
"This administration's appalling efforts to erase history under the disguise of eliminating DEI has seen no boundaries," Vicente stated in his speech. "I think it's disgraceful when you disrespect somebody who wore a uniform and fought for freedom."
Following his death, Freddy was posthumously presented with the Medal of Honor for his service, the highest and most prestigious military decoration awarded by the U.S. government.
"He was recognized by his men for his bravery, for going beyond his call of duty to save other American lives while losing his own," Vicente continued.
Since his death, Freddy has been honored with a road, a school, a memorial park, a Veterans home and a U.S. Navy destroyer named after him.
"I ask my friends on the other side of the aisle who have worn our uniform and some who have fought for our freedom to stand with me. To stand on the right side of history with the American people and oppose these un-American, unpatriotic policies coming from this administration," Vicente said.
