DHS Shelter and Services Program to grant $17.7M to RGV entities providing services for migrants

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Department of Homeland Security's Shelter and Services Program is granting $17.7 million in federal funding to support Rio Grande Valley cities and entities providing humanitarian services to migrants.

This funding will go directly to eligible local governments and non-federal entities throughout South Texas. SSP replaces DHS’s Emergency Food and Shelter Program, which also funded various communities in South Texas.

The funds were approved through the Fiscal Year 2024 Consolidated Appropriations Act. A total of $300 million will be allocated nationwide through the SSP program.

The South Texas cities and entities that will receive SSP funding are as follows:

  • $3,921,965 for the City of McAllen 
  • $216,000 for Iglesia Bautista West Brownsville 
  • $1,921,965 for the City of Brownsville 
  • $350,000 for the Bishop Enrique San Pedro Ozanam Center 
  • $7,421,965 for Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley 
  • $1,636,235 for Good Neighbor Settlement House 
  • $615,000 for the Salvation Army Corps Center 
  • $1,100,000 for La Posada Providencia 
  • $360,000 for Team Brownsville
