DHR hosts 2-week medical internship for high school students

EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Doctor's Hospital at Renaissance is hosting a two-week internship program for high school students interested in the medical field.

The internships will be available for incoming high school juniors and seniors, who will be involved in the following rotations during their internship:

  • Emergency medicine and trauma care
  • Internal medicine, OB/GYN, neurology, and cardiology
  • Clinical skills such as suturing, intubation, ultrasound, and BLS/CPR
  • Pharmacy, radiology, patient assessments, HIPAA compliance, and manuscript writing

"It definitely has given me a head start, because before I was like, very unsure of how to get to be in the medical field, but I'm able to ask these questions and get answers, not just look on the internet and find, oh, you can do this and this and this, I'm able to see real life pathways that these people took to get to where they were," said Saturn Trejo, Port Isabel Early College High School student.

Most high school students participting in the program stated, they will likely pursue in an area of medicine once graduating from high school.
