EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — With Fourth of July around the corner, DHR Health held a safety awareness seminar on Wednesday to discuss the safe handling of fireworks.

A trauma surgeon spoke about what people should do if they get a severe sunburn or mishap with fireworks.

"A really bad sunburn, most of the time, can be managed conservatively at home, staying hydrated, keeping in lots of fluids, and then doing cool compresses to those areas. Someone with a firework injury or a more significant burn using blistering of the skin, you need to come to the emergency room right away," said Dr. Ryan Shine, DHR Trauma Surgeon.

Other topics were discussed, including grilling and food safety, heat and hydration, water safety, traffic and alcohol awareness, and pet safety.
