SAN JUAN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Physician residents with DHR Health provided low-cost sports physicals this week to Pharr San Juan Independent School District students.
During the weeklong event, physician residents conducted head-to-toe physical exams that assessed students' organs, bones, joints, muscles, balance, and coordination to ensure they are ready to participate in school sports activities.
"In our school district, we require a new physical every year to participate in extracurricular activities," said PSJA Clinic Trainer Coordinator Jeff Darr.
School districts and the University Interscholastic League (UIL) require sports physicals to ensure students can participate safely in athletic, band, color guard, cheer, or dance programs.
The physical event aims to remove barriers to health care and show support for student health.
"We offer this for parents who may have transportation issues, they're at their job [or] they can't get to the doctor," Darr said. "It's a low-cost option to support our families and everybody."
DHR Health physicians were joined by students from the PSJA CTE Department and UTRGV physician assistant students.
