DHR Health awarded top status for lung cancer screening care

MCALLEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — DHR Health has been designated as a Lung Cancer Screening and Care Center of Excellence by GO2 for Lung Cancer, marking it as the only health system south of San Antonio to receive this recognition.

According to DHR Health, the designation on Thursday highlights DHR Health's advanced lung cancer screening and treatment program, which includes the use of low-dose CT scans, robotic-assisted technology, patient navigation, and artificial intelligence tools to detect lung cancer at earlier, more treatable stages.

"The technology is amazing. This kind of technology has AI implications, high-tech implications that allow us to make the diagnosis of lung nodules, which are spots in the lungs," said Dr. Federico Vallejo, Pulmonary Care physician. "It will help us make a diagnosis by doing biopsies of these lesions and to know whether there is cancer or there is something else, and that's extremely helpful for the patient. We have performed nearly 200 procedures of robotic bronchoscopy, and we're the only ones out of San Antonio that can provide this, this kind of diagnostic tool."

With this recognition, DHR Health continues to lead in lung cancer care, offering state-of-the-art screening and treatment options to the community south of San Antonio.
