EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) —Texas Democrats and candidates rallied in Edinburg Wednesday to “Get out the Vote,” the first of its kind in the Rio Grande Valley within the past five years.
Congressman Vicente Gonzalez and other speakers encouraged Hidalgo County residents to cast their ballots. They hope to beat 2020's voter turnout by 20,000.
Gonzalez is hopeful more people will rally their friends and family out to the polls.
"People are energized and mobilized like we haven’t seen in years here in South Texas, so you can see the excitement. Everyone is just taking this lunch break to come out and support the democratic candidates down the ballot. We’re going to have a couple of these today, but we’re feeling really good.”
According to the Hidalgo County Elections Department, the total number of registered voters in Hidalgo County is over 400,000. So far, over 122,000 voters have cast their ballots.
The Hidalgo County Republican Party is hard at work, hosting an event on Sunday in McAllen with U.S. Senator Ted Cruz.
