HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The residents of Harlingen in District 1 have elected a new city commissioner.

Delia Cavazos-Gamez has won the seat by 582 votes over Richard Uribe with 462 votes, according to unofficial Cameron County election results.

Back in August, current District 1 commissioner Ford Kinsley announced he would not seek reelection.

Cavazos-Gamez said what has been missing most in District 1 is connection and real engagement with residents. She wants to keep people informed every step of the way.

Her focus is on drainage improvements and infrastructure while enhancing public safety.

In addition, to find practical ways to slow the steady rise in property taxes, and bring transparency and clarity to what's happening with the airport, so that everyone can understand.

Cavazos-Gamez has been a nurse for 27 years and has a Bachelor's Degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice from UTRGV.
