PRIMERA, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A Texas teenager accused of killing his mother and stabbing his father is claiming insanity, according to his defense team.

Dallas Scott Gilbert, 19, is facing one count of first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of his mother, 47-year-old Angela Watt Gilbert.

Gilbert also faces a separate indictment, with charges him with aggravated assault with a weapon and attempt to commit murder for the stabbing of his father, Gary Scott Gilbert.

On Feb. 26, his legal team filed a notice of insanity defense in the case.

The notice states that Dallas was "insane at the time of the commission of the offense alleged in the instant indictment."

At 11:23 p.m. April 18, 2023, officers were dispatched to the 21800 block of Stuart Place Road, where they found Angela Watt Gilbert in a pool of blood in the living room. They also saw a man, identified as her husband, holding down Dallas, an affidavit stated.

The father yelled to officers that Dallas had stabbed them both. Angela died while en route to the hospital, after being stabbed more than eight times with a silver kitchen knife, the document details.

Dallas told police that he was outside talking to his mother before the attack.

“When all of a sudden, he started remembering that earlier in the day his dad was complaining about Dallas not [being] in shape to even throw a football,” the affidavit stated.

Dallas said he went into the kitchen and grabbed the knife. He then cut his mother's hand, while just playing around at first, before going into an "unexplainable rage of anger" and stabbing her, the document stated.

According to the affidavit, he then chased her inside the home, stabbing her in the back and ribs another three or four times. Dallas's father woke up to the screams, and came out of the bedroom. Dallas told police that he was filled with so much anger that he started stabbing him as well.

The affidavit states that Dallas told police he had not been drinking or doing drugs, but was sorry.

Dallas was taken into custody and his bond was set at $1.5 million. A hearing for the State's motion to examine Dallas' competency is scheduled for Tuesday.
